Warner/Chappell Music (WCM), the music publishing arm of Warner Music Group, has signed an exclusive agreement with the Free to Be Foundation to administer the rights to the popular children’s classic Free To Be... You and Me, which was created by Emmy award-winning actress Marlo Thomas and co-produced with Carole Hart.

    ?

From Michael Jackson to Diana Ross, the 1972 gold album features an all-star roster of celebrities who perform songs, poems and stories aimed at teaching children about empathy, individuality, and gender and racial equality. The album’s instant success prompted the development of a bestselling book, and Emmy and Peabody award-winning TV special starring Thomas with a host of well-known artists, including Michael Jackson, Roberta Flack, Alan Alda, Harry Belafonte, and Rosey Grier.

    ?

Marlo Thomas, creator of Free to Be...You and Me said: “Now more than ever, the world needs the inspirational lessons and themes of our original songs and stories. We are thrilled to be partnering with Warner/Chappell, as we know they will help us carry these important messages and values to new audiences around the globe."

    ?

Kurt Deutsch, Senior Vice President, Theatre and Catalogue Development for Warner/Chappell said: “Free To Be was a cultural phenomenon of its time, challenging societal norms for gender and race, and its powerful lessons continue to remain relevant today. Our team is excited to reimagine the cherished children’s songs and poems through collaborations with our songwriters and identify new opportunities in film, TV and advertising.”

    ?

The Free To Be Foundation oversees the Free To Be…You And Me project as well as develops and markets educational products that challenge stereotypes, fight discrimination, and encourage individuality and the freedom to pursue one’s talents and dreams. The Free To Be Foundation was represented on this deal by Michael Barra of Lively McCabe Entertainment.
